Recommendations of May 2003 Meeting of WG3

1. ISO 13250-1: Topic Maps -- Overview and Basic Concepts

WG3 appoints Steve Pepper and Motomu Naito as Editors of ISO 13250-1: Topic Maps -- Overview and Basic Concepts and requests them to prepare a first working draft for consideration at the Montreal meeting.

2. ISO 13250-2: Topic Maps -- Data Model

WG3 accepts N396 as the first Working Draft of ISO 13250-2: Topic Maps -- Data Model and appoints Lars Marius Garshol and Graham Moore as Editors. The Editors are instructed to respond to National Body comments on N396 and prepare a new version of this document that reflects the decisions taken at the London meeting and that conforms to ISO directives and to submit it to the secretariat as soon as possible for CD ballot.

3. ISO 13250-3: Topic Maps -- XML Syntax

WG3 accepts N398 as the first Working Draft of ISO 13250-3: Topic Maps -- XML Syntax and appoints Lars Marius Garshol and Graham Moore as Editors. The Editors are instructed to respond to National Body comments on N393 and prepare a new version of this document that reflects the decisions taken at the London meeting and that conforms to ISO directives and to submit it to the secretariat as soon as possible for CD ballot.

4. Topic Maps -- HyTime Syntax (HyTM)

WG3 accepts N391 as the first Working Draft of the Topic Maps -- HyTime Syntax. National Bodies and Liaisons are requested to provide feedback on whether there exists a user community for the HyTime-based syntax defined in ISO 13250:2000. If no such community is shown to exist, SC34 will feel justified in dropping HyTM from the next edition of ISO 13250 on the grounds that there is no user community to justify its maintenance.

5. Topic Maps -- Canonical XML Syntax

WG3 accepts N395 as the first Working Draft of Topic Maps -- Canonical XML Syntax and appoints Kal Ahmed as Editor. The Editor is requested to prepare a new Working Draft of this document that conforms to ISO directives.

6. Topic Maps -- Reference Model

WG3 accepts N393 as the first Working Draft of the Topic Maps -- Reference Model and appoints Steve Newcomb and Patrick Durusau as Editors. N393 should be republished as N393rev under the name Topic Maps -- Reference Model but with no other changes. The Editors are instructed to respond to National Body comments on N393 and prepare a User Requirements document for consideration at the next meeting of WG3. These requirements should take as their starting point the intent of the Reference Model as described in N278, which is to "define a reference model for topic maps, which can be used to define the relationships to other knowledge representations."

7. Editors of ISO 13250

WG3 recognizes that ISO 13250 started off as a single part standard and will in its next revision be composed of multiple parts. The role of Project Editors in a multipart standard is unclear to WG3 and it anticipates discussion of the role of Project Editors at the Montreal meeting.

8. ISO 18048 Topic Maps -- Query Language

WG3 appoints Robert Barta to replace Hans Holger Rath as co-editor of ISO 18048 Topic Maps -- Query Language along with Lars Marius Garshol. The Editors are instructed to prepare a revised User Requirements document, a Use Cases document (with the assistance of Mary Nishikawa), and a report that surveys existing query languages (with the assistance of Patrick Durusau), for consideration by the committee at its next meeting.

9. ISO 19756 Topic Maps -- Constraint Language

WG3 thanks Mary Nishikawa for her work in preparing N405, which it accepts as new User Requirements for TMCL. WG3 accepts the resignation of Steve Pepper as Editor of TMCL and appoints Graham Moore and Hans Holger Rath as new Editors. The Editors are instructed to prepare a revised set of User Requirements (with the assistance of Mary Nishikawa), a Use Cases document (with the assistance of Erica Santosaputri), and a report that surveys existing constraint languages (with the assistance of members of the Working Group), for consideration by the committee at its next meeting.

x. Next WG3 meeting

The next WG3 meeting will be held on August 1–4, 2003 in Montreal, Canada (in connection with IDEAlliance's Extreme Markup 2003 conference).
