Dear JTC 1 Members,
OASIS hereby applies for
a Category A liaison membership with ISO/IEC JTC1 SC34.
The primary contact for
the OASIS membership is Karl Best, Director of Technical Operations (karl.best@oasis-open.org), and the
secondary contact is Patrick Gannon, CEO (patrick.gannon@oasis-open.org).
The PR contact (if necessary) is Carol Geyer, Director of Communications (carol.geyer@oasis-open.org).
OASIS' goal in requesting
membership in JTC1 SC34 is to enable representatives of OASIS Technical
Committees (TCs) to participate in SC34 technical activities in order to further
collaborative and coordinated technical work between SC34 and the OASIS
TC.
OASIS, the Organization
for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards, is an international
member consortium whose purpose is to promote the use of XML and related
structured information standards through the creation of interoperability
specifications. Our 200+ member organizations include vendors, service
providers, and users of structured information technologies. OASIS was formed in
1993 as SGML Open for the purpose
of promoting the use of SGML technologies, and was
The focus of OASIS member
activities is the creation and implementation of XML-based interoperability
standards. For this purpose OASIS has created a Technical Committee policy (http://oasis-open.org/committees/process.shtml)
and an Intellectual
OASIS currently has ~20
TCs working on a variety of topics including e-business, security, web services,
interoperability, etc. A number of these TCs have direct applicability to SC34,
