SC22/WG20 views on the workings of the Cultural and Linguistic
Adaptability and User Interface Technical Direction of ISO/IEC JTC1
1998-10-21
ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG20 considers that:
WG20 considers cultural adpatability and internationalizationas being synonymous
ISO/IEC 10646 in many ways provides a common reference standard for all parts of this TD.
Existing standards should be enhanced by providing maximum Cultural and Linguistic Adaptability.
The committees of the new TD should not be put into the position to have to review the standards of all other committees in respect to their implementation of cultural and linguistic adaptability, since that would hinder the committees work on standards in their own program of work.
All formal links between the SCs and WGs should be lightly structured.
Chairs of SCs and Convenors of WGs should meet together every two years to ensure any necessary coordination.
In planning SC or WG meetings, convenors should examine if/when any meetings in the TD can be located at the same time and place, or immediately following other meetings. This consideration should also be applied to co-locating meetings of other bodies considered to be relevant to this.
The TD should list relevant ISO, national, regional and de facto standards, and bodies responsible for these, which may also be relevant to the work of this TD. Examples include: Internet standards, Document description standards, standards for codes for "cultural elements." Examples of such bodies include the Unicode Consortium, W3C, IETF, ISO/TC46/WG2, ISO/TC46/SC2/WG8, ISO/TC37/SC2 and ISO/TC68. Examples of relevant standards are ISO 3166, ISO CD 15924, ISO 639, and ISO 4217.
The TD should promote the importance of its standards outside the TD.
The TD should encourage national member bodies to find ways to link national committees covering Cultural and Linguistic Adaptability and User Interfaces.
The TD should explore ways of working with regional bodies which may already have links in some of these areas, such as CEN/TC304, and appropriate technical committees in other regional bodies, such as in ASIAN in Southeast Asia, and in ASARCO in South Asia.
