Subject: [Fwd: Approval process for 10646 2nd Edition]

Dear Ms Kimura,

Firstly I have no problem with the schedule proposed and a second edition is overdue given the number of published Amendments .As to the proposed targets for FPDAM I agree it is wise to talk in terms of early 2000 given you may not be submitting these FDAMs until late September. I assume the target date for this second edition is early 2000 ? Finally I would expect, even if no ballot is required on the consolidated text, that it is endorsed by SC2 given certain minor editorial changes may be required. We shall from our end treat it as a minor revision i.e direct to publication

Regards
Keith Brannon

  1. The Project Editor will during 1999 consolidate all approved Amendments, and Technical Corrigenda into a single text ready for publication as 2nd Edition of ISO/IEC 10646-1. Editorial corrigenda approved by JTC1/SC2 will also be included.
  2. The Amendments approved by FDAM ballot by the end of 1999 are expected to include all up to Amd.31, plus CORs 1 & 2 (and maybe a COR3 if we decide in Fukuoka that one is needed).
  3. No separate ballot will be needed for the 2nd Edition as a single document.
  4. Amds that are approved in an FDAM ballot will be published individually, if the approval date is no later than (say) September 1999. Otherwise they will be held back for publication in 2nd Edition only.
  5. The status of material after the Fukuoka meeting of SC2/WG2 is expected to be (assuming that all comments on current ballots are resolved):

    1. Published: COR1 & 2, Amds 1-13, 16, 19, 20.
    2. In FDAM ballot or published: Amds 17, 18, 21, 23.
    3. Ready for FDAM ballot: Amds 14, 22, 24-27.
    4. Ready for FPDAM ballot: Amds 15, 28-31.

For group (3.) the FDAM ballots are expected to end by September 1999 or before.
For group (4.) we would expect to resolve ballot comments at the September 1999 meeting of WG2, and hope they can get through FDAM ballot by the end of 1999, or early 2000, coinciding with the target date for publishing 2nd Edition.
