Dear Toshiko,

At their plenary meeting in Victoria in March, ISO/TC 211 asked the
secretariat to establish a liaison with ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 2. The request
was tabled by Working Group 4 - Geospatial services.

At a former plenary, ISO/TC 211 adopted a resolution instructing the
project leaders to ensure that ISO 8859-1 and ISO 10646 (UCS 2 and 4)
are used as normative references for character sets where appropriate.

There were conserns particulary from Japan on the use of ISO 10646.

The plenary appointed as their liaison representative to JTC 1/SC 2:
