Subject: WG5 at Berchtesgarten on video
X-Charset: ASCII
X-Char-Esc: 29

Dear WG5-ers,

Those of you who were in Berchtesgarten with WG5 this summer may remember
that Fred Hopper was very busy with his video camera during both social
events, such as the trip to the Eagle's Nest and our evening of eating,
drinking and singing (at which Maureen was the star!), and during our
business activities.

In a careless moment (:-) I offered to edit Fred's material, since we have
a broadcast standard television production unit, and he has recently sent
me a copy of what he produced. Apart from the obvious blackmail
possibilities (!-) of the sight of us all eating and drinking and singing
(even though one can clearly see, and hear, some people talking shop!!) he
has done an excellent job, and I should be able to produce quite a nice
little souvenir video.

However, before starting to edit it, we would like to know if anyone would be
interested, in principle, in purchasing a copy. There is no intention,
obviously, of making any money out of this, but we do need to cover the costs
of tapes for editing, copies, postage, etc.

The copies will be on VHS (or Betamax by special request, at a small premium)
in either PAL, most of Europe, SECAM, France and a few other places, or NTSC,
USA, Canada and Japan, encoding formats. It appears that the breakeven price
will be around 10 pounds for UK copies, or for PAL copies for European
destinations where payment is made in pounds. For European orders paid in
local currencies, or for copies in SECAM format (only really France and
Russia) the cost will be 12 pounds 50 pence. For US, Canada and Japan (all
NTSC format) the cost will be 15 pounds. All prices include a plastic case
and postage and packaging. These prices assume that at least 6 people
would wish to purchase a copy. If we get a lot of interest the price will
be reduced.

In order that I can decide whether to go ahead, I would be grateful if anyone
who thinks that they would probably wish to purchase a copy would let me know
as soon as possible, preferable by email to <miles.ellis@etrc.ox.ac.uk>.

Miles Ellis
