Subject: ISO 1539 is in Frame format
X-Charset: ASCII
X-Char-Esc: 29

I have converted ISO 1539 to Frame format.
I have sent a tape to Kurt and assume it will be
available on the server soon.

I have not checked the results. I regard that as the
job of the X3J3 editorial committee, but I wanted
to make it available to everyone as soon as possible.
Of course, as you find things wrong, keep a list.

Members of the editorial committee: please indicate
if you can do some careful proofing before the ABQ
meeting and I will divide up the work.

Every equation had to be reentered by hand and each
table had to be converted individually, although the
text was used in most cases. These are places (more)
likely to contain errors.

Except for the Table of Contents, I have not done
the files created "automatically". It is reasonable
to create the first part of Annex D and F.
The other parts use tools outside of Frame (the Unix
tool ptx for Annex E and my own program for the cross
reference in Annex D). I just plain goofed when doing
the conversion and messed up the markers that produce
the index (Annex F). It may be possible to reconstruct
it with some effort. I have assumed that these kinds of
things can be done more easily when we get the Frame
version that deals with SGML (we can go from Frame
to SGML, apply some conversion, then back to Frame).
I don't have that version, so will wait on these
projects until we see where we want to go from here.

I have incorporated the modified changes voted this
summer by WG5 and sent me by Rich Maine.

I am sure there are plenty of mistakes and I am sure
they can all be corrected when found. I made the
following changes on purpose; they can be changed
back if desired, of course.

1. page 154: The "w" in "Iw" has been italicized.

2. I put a period at the end of 13.13.17.

3. I put the entries in Table C.1 in alphabetical
order, simply because this saved me a lot of time
(I already had a Frame version of the table in
   that form).

I would certainly be happy to give you some more
detailed impressions of Frame someday. My
basic objection is that it is not "programmable";
many things are "ad hoc"--if there isn't a button
to push that does just what you want, it is hard to
do it. But it cerainly will produce a good document
and allow bigger and better things in the future
(such as hypertext links).

Let me know if you have questions about what you see.
