Dear WG5 Members,

I think that the postings of both Geoffrey Hunter and J. L. Schonfelder have
much contributed, though arguing from different viewpoints, in calling one's
attention to the REALITY which one often dislikes and hence avoids to talk
about.

There is, I believe, no one within WG5 who would question the desirability of
further delvelopment of Fortran. Opinions seem to differ on how fast the
development (removing old and introducing new features) should go, i.e. like
a snail or like a rabbit. I propose that we have a thorough discussion on
this fundamental issue and thus obtain one of the guiding principles of our
work. Otherwise much effort and time, e.g. at WG5 meetings, would be spent
in inefficient (wasteful) ways. If the majority favours a conservative
standpoint, the we could (it is not too late) vote out again those new
features that were voted in at Berchtesgaden. If the majority favours a
progressive viewpoint, then we should consider how we could increase the
speed and effectivity of the processing of the standard.

Best regards,
M. K. Shen
