Subject: Travel between Berchtesgarten and Brussels
X-Charset: ASCII
X-Char-Esc: 29

THIS MESSAGE IS BEING SENT TO ALL X3J3 AND WG5 EMAIL ADDRESSES. PLEASE
ACCEPT MY APOLOGIES FOR BOTHERING YOU IF YOU ARE NOT ATTENDING BOTH THE
WG5 AND X3J3 MEETINGS IN JULY.

At last week's meeting of X3J3 a number of those who were intending to attend
both the WG5 meeting in Berchtesgarten (5-9 July) and the X3J3 meeting in
Brussels (12-16 July) expressed an interest in some form of joint travel
between the two places over the intervening weekend. We did this in 1989
between Ispra (WG5) and Vienna (X3J3), and again in 1990 between Rotterdam
(WG5) and Oxford (X3J3). On both occasions those involved thoroughly enjoyed
the trip (as far as can be judged!).

Unfortunately, we have left it rather late this time and so any action taken
needs to be taken VERY quickly.

At the X3J3 meeting I suggested that one possibility might be to spend Friday
and Saturday nights somewhere on the Rhine - a suggestion that was well
received. I offered to contact Karl-Heinz to ask for his advice and assistance.

I have now received a reply from him (included in this note) which confirms
what I had suspected when I looked at a map on my return from X3J3 - namely
that my sense of geography is not very good (!), and that it might take too
long to get to what had seemed the nearest stopping point, namely Heidelburg.

He says:

> On returning to the GMD after a few days absence I have just read your mail
> from 17th May.
> Here is my proposal:
>
> 1) WG5 should spend half a day to go to Salzburg by coach.
> You can also go to Salzburg on Friday afternoon, after the meeting has
> been adjourned.
> 2) Heidelberg: you will arrive at Heidelberg main station at ca. 24.00
> o clock (travel by train: duration ca. 6 hours, change at Freilassing and
> Munich).
> 3) Proposal: Friday afternoon: go to Salzburg, Saturday morning (8.00
> o clock), go to Munich (Hotel) by a coach, which has to be organized,
> arrival at the Hotel:about 10.00 o clock, subsequently sightseeing of
> Munich, next day: travel on by train to Brussels.

> Karl-Heinz

I mentioned to Karl-Heinz in my note that being so close to Salzburg made it
an obvious attraction, despite the crowds of tourists that it attracts, and
his suggestion that we spend Friday afternoon (and evening?) there and travel
on to Munich the following morning has a certain logic. I have not been to
either Munich or Salzburg for almost 30 years, but Salzburg is, in my view,
one of the world's prettiest cities (as well as being Mozart's birthplace -
as the good people of Salzburg were happy to recognise once he was safely
dead!), and Munich, although a larger city, certainly used to be a very
interesting one.

I suggest, therefore, that we either take his advice (and ask him to make
appropriate arrangements!), or we make our own individual arrangements. No
doubt those few (such as me) who are only booked in at the Max-Peschal-Haus
until Friday will be able to extend their stay by one night; the majority
appear to have already decided to leave on Saturday anyway!

A decision needs to be made quickly, however, not least because there is
a minimum viable number for ordering coaches, etc. Could everyone interested
in any form of joint travel please mail me (MEllis@vax.oxford.ac.uk) NO LATER
THAN 1500 BST FRIDAY 28th MAY (i.e. 1600 in most of Europe, 10.00 a.m. on the
East coast USA, 7.00 a.m. on the West coast) with their answers to the
following questions:

1. If Karl-Heinz' proposal (Friday p.m. by coach to Salzburg, and return to
hotel; Saturday a.m. by coach to Munich; Sunday by train to Brussels)
is put into practice, would you join the party? (How many?)

2. If Karl-Heinz' proposal is put into practice, but you are travelling
independently (e.g. by car) would you be interested in staying at the
same place in Munich on Saturday night? (How many?)

3. If Karl-Heinz' proposal does not attract enough support to be viable,
would you be interested in joining with others to spend the weekend in
the Berchtesgarten/Salzburg area and travelling together (by train or
    plane) to Brussels on Sunday?

4. If Karl-Heinz' proposal does not attract enough support to be viable,
would you be interested in travelling by train to Heidelburg on Friday
afternoon/evening anyway, despite the late arrival, spending Saturday
and Sunday morning there, and travelling on to Brussels by train on
    Sunday afternoon?

5. If you have already decided (as at least one has!) to fly to Brussels,
rent a car there and drive to Berchtesgarten, and back, would you be
interested (and willing!) in taking any passengers? (Presumably in
exchange for a share of the rental, petrol, etc.)

*** I will analyse all replies on the afternoon of May 28th and send email
*** to inform everyone of the result.

I am copying this message to WG5 in case any WG5 members are planning to
attend the X3J3 meeting and might be interested in joining any group travel
which is set up.

I look forward to your replies

Miles
