To X3J3 -

It's less than a week now until X3J3#125 in Champaign. You all have the
agenda, but I would like to summarize what I believe are important tasks at
this meeting. First of course are the interpretations. The flood of new
requests seems to have abated somewhat, but it is important to attempt to
complete those on the books and address those (few at the moment) new ones.
Three of the interpretation subgroups have pending items; only CIO is
finished. The three unfinished items assigned to /edit will be assumed by
GEN, which will spread the remaining interpretation work out reasonably
evenly among GEN, DATA, and PROC. (I sent around a list of those outstanding
items earlier.) DickH will be at the meeting to head GEN, JeanneM will head
DATA again at this meeting (as she did at the last meeting), and KurtH will
be present (of course, as host) to head PROC. AndrewT will not be at the
meeting, so I guess I'll try to pinch hit for him with regards to assignment
of new topics and any 006 issues.

CIO will team with /parallel to work with the X3H5 representatives to
complete the Fortran 90 binding to the X3H5 parallel model. JonS will
not be at the at the meeting; RichB will head this team in working with
X3H5. I expect that we will have to make some significant decisions during
the week regarding this binding, so be sure and be familiar with the draft
that I distributed earlier, and bring your copy to the meeting. (The model
document was in the premeeting, the binding I distributed separately via
email in postscript form.)

The /edit and /JOR subgroups will be working full speed ahead; /edit on
editorial aspects of the next standard document and /JOR on requirements for
the next standard. This meeting is the last X3J3 meeting before the 1993 WG5
meeting at which (I expect) requirements to be the main topic. On this
point, there may be some potential requirements from the recent POSIX
announcement. That came over the email as document x3j3.1993-114 and should
become an X3J3 document - DavidM, would you please give this an X3J3/93-nnn
number and we can put copies on the table. I called Michael Hannah after
seeing that message and during the course of that conversation it seemed like
a sort of "showstopper" in that effort was Fortran 90's lack of a C typedef
functionality; perhaps that is also a possible requirement (LenM, take note).
I hope that DickW will give a full report on the POSIX situation (he was
traveling and I have not been able to make contact with him).

So things are getting exciting - we will be busy in Champaign.

Tomorrow I am meeting with the OMC (formerly SPARC) to give the X3J3 annual
report (which was in the premeeting distribution). Attached to the annual
report, among other things, were X3J3/93-013, our interpretation procedures,
and X3J3/93-006r (yes, the WHOLE thing). I have suggested to the OMC that
the main topic of my meeting with them should be what to do with the 006
since it is (in X3J3's opinion) the optimal handling of interpretation
requests but is not completely in accord with either of the (slightly
incompatible) ISO and ANSI procedures for handling interpretations. Another
issue that I want to clarify with the OMC is the situation regarding the $300
international fee. If there are other matters you think I need to discuss
with the OMC you should let me know today. I'll give a report of the OMC
meeting next week at the X3J3 meeting.

Speaking of the OMC, they have 30 day letter ballot now scheduled, ending on
June 8, regarding our single candidate for the X3J3 vice chair position.
After June 8 I expect Rich Kelble will officially be our new vice chair.
Congratulations Rich. 'Course now we will need a new secretary........

See y'all next week in Champaign.

JerryW
