Subject: Ad hoc character meeting in Copenhagen, April 21-23, 1993

There will be an SC22 ad hoc meeting to discuss character issues in Copenhagen,
April 21-23, 1993. WG5 should be represented at this meeting. It would be
best if several WG5 members could attend. If you are interested and can go
to Copenhagen in April, please let me know. I need to send the names of our
representatives to Keith Hopper in New Zealand by Dec. 23, 1992 (via email).

More information about this meeting appears in the WG5 distribution that will
be put in the postal mail tomorrow. Also see the attached note from
Bob Follett, Chair of SC22.

Subject: (SC22.202) SC22 Ad Hoc Meeting on Character Sets

This note is addressed to the SC22 Working Group Conveners.

By now, you should have received the formal invitation faxed to you by the
SC22 Secretariat, asking for your nomination of experts for the SC22 Ad Hoc
Meeting on Character Sets, 21-23 April 1993, in Copenhagen (which is also
being distributed as SC22 N1294). I strongly urge every working group in
SC22 to be represented at this meeting.

As most of you probably know, this meeting is a result of Resolution 216 from
the Ellivuori plenary (SC22 N1242). The specific purpose of the meeting is
to address the need for the technical experts in our working groups to
develop an understanding of IS 10646:1992, and related character set
standards. Another purpose is to gain a better understanding of the
concepts of "character" and "glyph." Since SC22 standards must now be
built using these standards, it is important that we understand exactly
what they say and how they can be accommodated in our development work.

We are asking SC2 and SC18 to send experts to this meeting so that they
can help our experts understand their standards and can interact with us
in discussions about the implications to SC22's work. Please be sure to
take advantage of this opportunity and sent your nomination of experts
to attend to Keith Hopper as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards,
Bob Follett
