Subject: J3 Reunion update 020307
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

We got a pretty good response from the first
mailing regarding a tentative J3 reunion, so it
looks like it is a pretty definite thing.

Mallory has reserved rooms at the Mariott for
the Friday and Saturday before the 2003 WG5
meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, and we have
a meeting room for Saturday, 2003 March 29, so
we have the whole day to do what you decide.

First, let me apologize if you get this twice,
as I want to keep a list of those who have
responded, even those on the WG5 or J3 mailing
lists.

One of the main things I need is more contacts.
Because of some of the hints you have given me,
I have tracked down a few people, but I need
leads especially to the "older" bunch. [ How
much older can you get, you may ask ? ]

The other thing is the schedule of events. I
have received the following suggestions, most
fairly vague, but interesting. If you would
like to volunteer to take one of these and be
responsible for creating something of it, that
would be terrific.

Jerry has taken the first step. He has created
a Geezer Gallery with some quiz questions. Your
first task is to try to get some answers and
bring them to the reunion. I'll put a link on
the reunion web site, but please have a look:

http://www.ionet.net/~jwagener/oldGeezers.html

Here are some more suggestions:

  hiking
  presentation of some classic papers
     (such as Bruce Martin's
      "Letter O considered harmful")
a photo album (paper) available at the mtg
     (more contributions are needed)
  your first experiences with Fortran
  dinner cruise on the lake
presentation by John Backus (anybody know
      where to find him?)
  an activity for spouses/friends
a preview of F2K for those not involved
      in its development
an IBM film about Fortran (does anybody
      know how to get this?)
  attend a Las Vegas show
  a Fortran programming contest
for each standard, candidates for the 3
      best features, worst features, hardest
to implement features, hardest to teach
      features, etc.
punch cards for name tags (where is John
      Lauer?)

Keep the ideas coming and let me know what
you want to do.
