For the most part, I endorse Bert's list of requirements (though I
don't entirely agree with his conclusions, since I'd put SGML ahead
of LaTeX). However, I think there's another, hidden requirement
implicit in his "invariability" requirement with which I do not
agree. He mentions a sort of prerequisite that there should only be
one "master" document which is maintained by a single individual or
a small editing group. This I certainly agree with. However, he
seems to also imply that only a single view of this master document
will be made available electronically. I see no need for such a
requirement, and in fact I doubt if the other requirements can be
truly satisfied with a single view. I think a solution will
inevitably involve at least two different views: an image of the
master in its "native" format (e.g., a binary Frame or Word file,
ascii with embedded SGML or LaTeX markup, etc.), and a
universally-printable (and almost universally-viewable) format,
i.e., PostScript. Additional views may also be desirable: a
straight ascii version, the extracted syntax, a KWIC index of some
sort, etc. I would expect that these views would be generated
automatically from the native master, either by the editor or by
others who happen to have the appropriate tools. As I said in an
earlier posting, I'd want to have a good way to correlate at least
some of these views, but I don't think the correlation has to be
based on page and line breaks (which are notoriously difficult to
preserve when shipping documents around between different
processors, or even the same processor at different sites).
