Subject: Changing Fortran terms

Dick Weaver suggests that all occurrences of 'executable program' be changed
to 'program'. Adding 'executable' to 'program' was something upon which Lloyd,
as Editor, often insisted. The term 'program' is ambiguous, as the glossary
makes clear. There are executable programs and main programs.
Yes, there is plenty of scope for improving the editorial quality of the
standard, but we must be careful not to propose edits that introduce
ambiguities. We must also be careful about changing the meaning of terms
because people get used to them.
                                    John Reid.
