Thanks for your comments, which have all been on the relative
merits of PS and PDF. Enough to convince me that I need to 
continue mounting both. 

Another point is that I propose to make more use of text files. If I
receive a file as text, I propose to mount only that. And I will myself
use only text files for the indices of documents and for the address
list. Here is a new summary:

For SD1, the Complete Document Register, I have mounted a text version
and I propose to discard the PostScript and PDF versions.

I will continue to mount PostScript file as PDF too, but any text
files that I receive or generate myself will be mounted only as
text. 

I am considering moving the contents of each Acrobat, PostScript, or
Text directory into its host. This will make it easier to see which
versions of any particular document are available.
