Subject: Fortran-related Resolutions from the Berlin SC22 Plenary

The following Fortran-related resolutions were all passed unanimously at
last month's SC22 Plenary in Berlin, which I attended as WG5 Convenor:

Resolution 99-14: Extension of Schedule for Project JTC 1.22.02.01.01

Recognizing that a combination of factors has arisen delaying the
completion of the revision of ISO/IEC 1539-1:1997 as detailed in
document SC22 N2942, ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC22 approves the extension by two
years for completion of this revision until 2004.

Resolution 99-15: Approval for Concurrent Registration and Ballot

  ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC22 approves:

Concurrent PDTR registration and PDTR ballots for Projects JTC
1.22.02.01.02 (Floating Point Exception Handling Technical Report Type
  2) and JTC 1.22.02.01.04 (Enhanced Data Type Facilities Technical Report
  Type 2);

Resolution 99-20: Appointments/Reappointments of SC22 Working Group
                    Conveners

ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC22 approves the following appointments of SC22 Working
  Group Conveners:

Dr. John Reid as Convener of WG5 (pending confirmation from the United
  Kingdom Member Body).
  .
  .. plus lots of others!
  .

Resolution 99-27: Appreciation: Dr. Miles Ellis

ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC22 expresses its gratitude and appreciation to Dr.
Miles Ellis for his many contributions as Convener of ISO/IEC JTC
  1/SC22/WG5 - Fortran.

The first two resolutions reflect decisions that we took in Cadarache. As
far as the PDTR ballots are concerned, it proved impractical to attempt
what we discussed in Cadarache, namely to ask the Plenary to APPROVE the
revised TRs at the Plenary, and so I asked for concurrent ballots and sent
the documents to Bill Rinehuls immediately after the Plenary. They have
now been issued for Registration and Approval ballots, which will both end
on 5th January 2000.

[The FDIS for Part 2 was also submitted to Bill at the same time, and it
has been forwarded by him to JTC1 for its final approval ballot. Since
that is only a 2-month ballot it may be approved before the end of the
year, depending on how quickly the JTC1 Secretariat sends it out for
balloting.]

The final 2 resolutions confirm my resignation and John's appointment.
[The confirmation from the UK is a formality. It was agreed at a BSI
meeting on 7th September, but notification had not reached Bill Rinehuls
before he left for the Plenary.]

I shall now pass the reins to John. I hope to see many of you at the UK
WG5 meeting in 2001 - assuming that it is held within reasonable distance
of Oxford!

Miles
