Subject: Resignation of Convenor

Those of you who have read the Cadarache Resolutions posted by David
Muxworthy, may have been surprised by resolution C16.

When I was appointed as Convenor of WG5 in early 1995, following Jeanne
Martin's resignation, it had been my intention to remain as your Convenor
for (at least) two three-year-terms. As a result of a (rare ;-) error by
the SC22 Secretariat, my re-appointment was not on the agenda for last
year's SC22 Plenary, and so my initial term of office was extended to
nearly five years instead of nearly four. It had been my hope that I would
be able to remain as your Convenor until the completion of the revision of
the base Fortran standard to create Fortran 200x, but it is now clear that
this will not be completed within my next potential term of office, which
would have ended in September 2002.

I have been finding it increasingly difficult to justify the time required
to properly carry out my duties as Convenor since, as you will all probably
know, my present job as Director of Oxford's audio-visual, television and
media services does not really have anything to do with Fortran at all!

After careful consideration, therefore, I have decided not to apply for
re-appointment by SC22 when my present term of office expires at this
year's Plenary in September. The UK will be coming forward with a proposal
for a replacement, as it currently holds the Secretariat for WG5, and I
hope that, if various details can be sorted out in time, it will be
possible for him to be appointed by SC22 at its September Plenary meeting.
If, for any reason, this is not possible then I shall stay on as caretaker
Convenor until things are sorted out.

I informed those members of WG5 who were at last week's meeting in
Cadarache of my resignation, but I am now taking this opportunity to tell
everyone that this is the end of my involvement in Fortran standardization
activities.

I joined WG5 at its second meeting in 1986 and have attended 17 of the
eighteen meetings held since then. During the same period I will have
attended six SC22 Plenaries, one SC2 Plenary, five meetings of WG20 and
three SC22 Ad Hoc meetings on character issues. I also attended about 25
X3J3 meetings during the same period, making a total of just over a full
year of standards meetings (c. 54 weeks)!!

I have enjoyed working with you all, and hope that our paths will cross in
the future. I certainly intend to be present for at least part of the 2001
meeting of WG5 in the UK.

I shall, of course, be attending the Plenary in Berlin in September to
represent WG5's views, and to press for approval of various issues that
were raised in Cadarache. As soon as my successor has been appointed,
however, we shall begin to alter the process for distributing documents,
etc. Until further notified, though, any documents for posting to the WG5
electronic document store should continue to be sent to me.
