Subject: Cadarache Meeting Announcement on web and ftp

As you all know, this year's meeting of WG5 will take place at Cadarache in
the south of France from June 14-18.

The formal announcement of the meeting, together with the preliminary
agenda, is now on the WG5 web site (http://www.etrc.ox.ac.uk/SC22WG5/), and
is also on the WG5 ftp site (ftp://ftp.nag.co.uk/sc22wg5/). N1331 is the
official announcement and N1332 is the preliminary agenda. Both documents
are available from the ftp site in Acrobat (pdf), gzipped PostScript, html
and text formats.

The announcement and preliminary agenda have also been issued as a single
SC22 document, N2881.

The meeting will have four major items of business:

1. Processing of comments received during the FCD ballot on the revision
of Part 2 of the Fortran Standard. This ballot closes on May 20th, and so
the comments will be available before the meeting. It is intended that
this meeting will make the final decision on all issues arising from the
ballot, and any member body wishing to be involved in this ballot
resolution should ensure that they are represented at the meeting.

2. Review of the current status of the revision of Part 1 of the Fortran
Standard - Fortran 2000. The current schedule requires J3 to hand over a
Working Draft to WG5 in early 2000, so this will be the last WG5 meeting
before we have the actual WD. There will be a meeting of J3 in Oxford the
week before the WG5 meeting, so we shall have absolutely up-to-date
information concerning progress available at our meeting. I anticipate
that there may be some areas in which WG5 can carry out useful technical
work to assist J3 during the week. There may also be some difficult
decisions to make if, as currently appears possible, there is a chance that
J3 will be unlikely to complete its delegated task in full within the
agreed time schedule.

3. Since our last meeting the two TRs have been published, and Part 3
should be published any day (I am surprised that it has not been yet; it
was approved before Christmas). We need to establish appropriate
maintenance procedures.

4. JTC1 is placing increased emphasis on Business Plans, and our Strategic
Plan is overdue for revision. Both TRs and Parts 2 and 3 of the Standard
should all have been published by the end of 1999, while Fortran 2000 is
expected start its formal approval process in 2000. This is an opportune
moment, therefore, to start planning for what happens next, and to express
our thoughts in the form of Business and Strategic Plans.

Full details of how to reserve accommodation for the meeting can be found
on the WG5 web site, and in N1331. It is, however, worth emphasising that
accommodation in France is relatively cheap compared with some other
countries (such as the UK!). The recommended accommodation is in the "Host
Mansion" attached to Chateau Cadarache, where the meeting will take place.
Single rooms in the Host Mansion are between 204 and 235 French Francs per
day, including breakfast, while double rooms are 311 FF per day, including
breakfast. (200 FF is approximately 22 UK pounds or 35 US dollars). There
is also alternative accommodation nearby for those who want a swimming
pool, etc. Lunch will be available at the Chateau for around 80 FF (£9 or
$14).

As far as travel is concerned, our hosts advise that the best way is to fly
to Marseilles and then to drive from there (about 70km or 45 miles). It is
also possible to travel by train to Aix-en-Provence or Avignon, as well as
Marseilles, but our hosts advise that the train services in this part of
France are prone to disruption by industrial action, and they do not
recommend this mode of travel.

More complete details are available via the web site, which also links to a
French site which has been established specially for the meeting, and which
will, no doubt, contain more up-to-date information than the official
announcement.

Finally, will heads of delegations PLEASE remember to notify both me and
the local host Patrice Lignalet, <lignelet@vcnam.cnam.fr>, who is coming
from their country no later than one month before the meeting, and earlier
if possible.

I look forward to seeing many of you in France in June.
