Subject: European country adoption of Fortran 95
To: sc22wg5@dkuug.dk

To European members of WG5; to other members for information.

It was noted at a meeting of BSI IST/5 yesterday that Fortran 95 could not
(yet) be adopted as a British Standard because of a bureaucratic
obstacle.

Fortran 90 was also issued as a European Standard (EN 21539, November
1992). Members of CEN (that is the European Union plus Iceland, Norway
and Switerland) have an agreement whereby CEN standards are also
accepted as member body standards and CEN have not yet replaced Fortan
90 by Fortran 95. So, whereas BSI adopted Fortran 90 as a national
standard and re-issued the document with a BSI cover, it can take no
such action with Fortran 95 until CEN has itself adopted Fortran 95.

BSI are to approach CEN urging them not to cause undue delay. This is
to advise you of the situation and to ask you to bring this matter to
the attention of your own national bodies.
