JLW informal report on the Vienna WG5 meeting

WG5 met July 21-25, 1997, in Vienna, Austria; seven national =
delegations attended: Austria, Finland, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the UK, =
and the US. The results of the meeting are recorded in the resolutions, =
WG5-N1290. (Since I have just returned from Austria, this report =
is later than normal and therefore the following information may be =
"old news".)

At this meeting WG5:

advanced the technical reports on IEEE exception handling =
and allocatable components to the next level of ISO processing,=20

authorized a revision of part 2 (varying length strings),=20

completed the conditional compilation CD document for part 3 (WG5-=
N1301),=20

revised the WG5 strategic plan (WG5-N1287),=20

responded to the J3 request for clarification on the =
interval arithmetic requirement,=20

requested J3 to take over the work on C interoperability.

The main changes to the strategic plan were to (a) change the time =
frame for part 1 revisions from "5 years" to "5-10 years" and =
(b) strengthen the wording regarding mandatory and optional parts of =
the Fortran standard. The strategic plan now more clearly says that all =
of part 1 is mandatory (e.g., no subsets) and that all the other parts =
are optional.

WG5 requests that the interval arithmetic requirement be developed in =
such a way that it need not impose significant costs for =
implementations, subject only to the mandatory/optional constraints of =
the strategic plan, and that J3 may opt to make it an optional part =
(e.g., part 4), provided it does the work in the Fortran 2000 time =
frame. (The main effects of this action are to (a) rule out an =
intrinsic data type in part 1 and (b) open up the part 4 option.)

The request regarding C interoperability was the eleventh-hour surprise =
of this meeting; J3's options are to (a) accept responsibility for =
the technical report, (b) accept responsibility for the work, not as a =
TR but as a Fortran 2000 requirement, and (c) decline the request.

The next WG5 meeting is scheduled for June 8-12, 1998, in =
Trolhatten, Sweden.
