Subject: IMPORTANT - Subgroups for Las Vegas

As you all know, a large part of the Las Vegas meeting will be spent
working in subgroups.

During the first part of the week, these subgroups will be reviewing the
reports produced by the three "electronic subgroups", together with any
other relevant papers, in order that they can produce recommendations for
what features should be added to those already approved for Fortran 2000.
This process will be completed on Wednesday morning in full committee.

During the last part of the week the same subgroups will carry on working
to help refine the specification of those features which have been approved
and/or to review work already carried out by X3J3.

We (Jerry and I) assume that X3J3 members will remain with their normal
subgroups (with /io and /jor being merged into MISC for this meeting).
However, that still leaves the non-X3J3 members of WG5 and several
additional members of the US delegation who, to the best of my knowledge
are not regular X3J3 members.

As a reminder, the three subgroups, their topics, and the primary reports
produced by their electronic instances, are:

HPC High Performance Computing issues N1239

DATA Data abstraction and Object Oriented issues N1238

MISC Anything else N1240

The first two correspond to the two broad themes that WG5 decided in
Dresden should form the basis of the Fortran 2000 revision.

In order to save time on the Monday morning, Jerry and I intend to allocate
everyone to a subgroup before the meeting. Would all non-X3J3 members (and
any X3J3 members who wish to change) please send me an email indicating
their preference for subgroup as soon as possible, and in any case no later
than Wednesday February 5th. If you do not send any such email then we
shall assume that X3J3 members wish to remain with their normal subgroup
and others are willing to join any of them.

As far as possible we shall ensure that individual wishes are adopted, but
it may not be possible if this would make the numbers too uneven.

The final allocations to subgroups will be announced on the Monday morning.
