                                                               1996 Nov 16

X3J3 meeting 139 (#139) took place Nov 11-15 in Las Vegas, NV. The WG5
convenor was present to work with X3J3 in organizing the joint WG5/X3J3
meeting in February. The principal objectives of #139 were to (1) progress
the technical work on the Fortran 2000 (F2000) requirements and (2) prepare
for the Feb joint meeting.

Good progress is being made on the F2000 requirements. At this meeting syntax
was approved for asynchronous I/O and parameterized derived types; firm
specifications were approved for derived-type I/O and procedure pointers.
Technical work was completed on two minor technical enhancements (M.4 and
M.10) and a new minor technical enhancement was added (M.17) - see 97-010.
Except for interval arithmetic specifications, no work is scheduled on any of
the current F2000 requirements during the Feb meeting.

The Feb joint meeting is to deal almost exclusively with completing the
identification of F2000 requirements and doing as much technical development
as possible on new requirements identified at that time - the requirements
identification process is scheduled to be completed by Wednesday morning of
the meeting, with the rest of the week devoted to technical development.
Evening sessions are scheduled for the C interoperability TR and the
conditional compilation part; these sessions may result in resolutions, but
otherwise these projects will not have plenary agenda time. Other than the
opening and closing sessions, all plenary sessions will be devoted to
processing the work of three ad hoc technical groups: High Performance
Computing (HPC), Data Enhancements (DATA), and Miscellaneous Requirements
(MISC).

At #139 X3J3 "filtered" a long list of potential requirements currently under
discussion by WG5/misc; the results will be added to the WG5/misc email
discussions. X3J3 also discussed a "minimal" object-oriented extension, which
will be added to the WG5/data email discussions. X3J3 expects that HPC will
focus primarily on interval arithmetic during the Feb meeting. HPC will
comprise the union of WG5/hpc and X3J3/hpc; DATA will comprise the union of
WG5/data and X3J3/data; MISC will comprise the union of WG5/msc, X3J3/io, and
X3J3/jor.

The next meeting of X3J3 (#140) will be the joint meeting with WG5, Feb 10-14,
1997, in Las Vegas.
