X3J3 meeting #138 was held August 12-16, 1996, in Las Vgas, NV. The
objectives of this meeting were to (1) organize in a manner to most
effectively ccordinatewith the WG5 requirements process and content for
Fortran 2000 and (2) work on the technical development of the requirements
identified by WG5 in Dresden.

To this end subgroup X3J3/oof was evolved to X3J3/data, with responsibilities
of coordination with WG5/data and technical development of various "data
related" requirements (e.g., parameterized derived types and procedure
pointers). X3J3 subgroup activities relating to high peformance, parallel,
and numerical computing were consolidated into X3J3/num, with responsibilities
of coordination with WG5/hpc and technical development of the interval
arithmetic requirement established by WG5. X3J3/jor will coordinate with WG5/
misc and manage development of the various "minor technical enhancements" for
Fortran 2000. Two of the five firm requirements for Fortran 2000 established
by WG5 in Dresden are I/O related (derived-type I/O and asynchronous I/O), and
X3J3/io will be responsible for the technical development of these
requirements.

The X3J3 Fortran 2000 development workplan (X3J3/96-115r6) organizes the
development of each requirement into three phases: specs/syntax/edits. At
this meeting specs were approved for asynchronous I/O (X3J3/96-147r1),
procedure pointers (X3J3/96-142), and parameterized derived types (X3J3/96-
141r1). In addition, syntax was approved for six minor technical enhancements
(see 115r6 for details). One liaison report was prepared, for the C
interoperability technical report (X3J3/96-145r1), and detailed responses to
the WG5 Dresden resolutions were approved (X3J3/96-137r2). Tentative
indication (though no formal action) is that (1) a derived-type/module
implementation is not feasible for interval arithmetic and (2) making interval
arithmetic an optional part of the standard may be advisable.

The WG5 proposal for a joint WG5/X3J3 meeting February 10-14, 1997, in Las
Vegas was approved, and activities are underway to establish the meeting
format and draft agenda. Future X3J3 pre- and post-meeting distributions (and
meeting announcements and minutes) will be "totally electronic", as described
in X3J3/96-140r1, via anonymous ftp from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu. The next X3J3
meeting is November 11-15, 1996, in Las Vegas.
