The subsequent BSI DPS/13 (now IST/5) minutes include the following summary: "The meeting was chaired by Mr Bemer (USA). ... Ad hoc groups were set up to deal with COBOL (convenor Mr Coupers, USA), FORTRAN (convenor Mrs Adams, USA), PL/I subsets (convenor Mr Adams, USA), ALGOL (Dr Hill, UK), BASIC (informal get-together). Two days were devoted to the ad hoc group meetings. Reports were delivered from the existing working groups WG1 - PLIP and WG2 - Graphics. A third working group was set up to take over from the DBMS study group which is now ISO/TC 97/SC 5/WG 3, secretariat Sweden. PASCAL, APL and OSCL were also considered. Resolutions wre passed relating to DBMS, PL/I, graphics, minimal BASIC, FORTRAN, CORAL 66, PL/I subsets, COBOL, minimum COBOL, and ALGOL. Another resolution concerned the processing of programming language standards." Then, specifically on SC5 Resolution 9 (FORTRAN): "A draft proposal (USA) 397, as amended by N410, was accepted and is to be submitted to SC 5 members by letter ballot. An ad hoc meeting of FORTRAN experts was held, and they had felt that it would be beneficial to have another such meeting in late 1978 or 1979. It was agreed that the UK might invite this meeting." The Hague meeting, via SC5 resolution 6 [text not to hand], is generally regarded as the start of international member body cooperation on programming language standardization, as distinct from foreign nationals participating in national standards bodies. The report demonstrates the minimal state of SC5 working groups in 1977. The other meeting missing from your list is Edinburgh, August 8-12, 1994. David
