Dear friends and colleagues,

it came as a surprise to me when I learned that the standard IBIS hotel
rooms at the rate of 122,- DM/night come with either a

  French double bed (1,40 m = 4' 7" wide) in a "single room"

or with

2 simple beds (NOT next to each other, unmovable) in a "double room" .

For those of you who have booked double rooms, therefore, I would like
to make it clear that you have the choice of either sleeping in a very
"cozy" (or should I say cramped) French bed or in two separate beds
mounted along two adjoining walls of the room (they cannot be moved).
In any case, the rate for single and for double occupancy for either
room is always 122,- DM per night, and breakfast is always 15,- DM
per person.

Alternatively, the IBIS still has a few rooms available which are more
spacious and have a couch and two easy chairs, and these have two regular
beds alongside each other!!! The rate for these rooms is 170,- DM (plus
2*15,- for breakfast = 200,- DM total), but it may be worth the extra
48,- DM to some of you to have a larger, more comfortable room with
a more standard setup (I believe the bathrooms are also somewhat larger).

Of course, at that rate, you can also get a double room at the hotel
"mercure" (formerly Newa), which is 198,- DM per night including breakfast
for two people (again, that's the special university rate when booking
through Mrs Engelmann). The mercure is less than 200 yards from the IBIS
(Lilienstein), so getting together wouldn't be a big problem, but you would
still have breakfast separately. In general, the mercure may be a bit
higher quality in both rooms and breakfast, but I hesitated to choose it
because their singles are already 168,- DM (incl. breakfast) - more than
30,- DM more than at the IBIS.

In any case, the choice is yours. Please tell me about any problems you
may have, or any assistance you may need, and please let me know about your
travel plans - at least the

    arrival and departure dates,
    single or double room,

or whether you really would like to have something cheaper/more luxurious.

IMPORTANT: Since about half of the reserved rooms have been booked by now,
the release deadline for the block of rooms has been pushed back by a few
weeks. Nonetheless, I urge all of you who have not yet made arrangements
to make your reservations soon. There have been very few bookings by
German and UK members until now - to the best of my knowledge.

See you in Dresden,

Wolfgang
