The major objectives of this meeting were to (1) complete the set of US
requirements for Fortran 2000 to be considered at the July WG5 meeting, (2)
otherwise prepare for the WG5 meeting, and (3) progress the technical
development of preliminary Fortran 2000 requirements. Nothing was done on
Fortran 95 (awaiting the F95 DIS) or on interpretations (between F90 and F95
interpretations) at this meeting.

X3J3 will submit 16 requirements not already on the preliminary WG5 list,
possibly the "biggest" two being support for interval arithmetic and stream
i/o. At the WG5 meeting the US will propose that there be 6 "high" priority
requirements for Fortran 2000 (derived-type i/o, condition handling,
asynchronous i/o, pointers to procedures, object-oriented Fortran, and
interval arithmetic), 7 "medium" priority requirements, 8 "low" priority
requirements, and 15 "minor technical enhancements". (See X3J3/96-115r2 for
details.)

The work on the three technical reports (TRs), parameterized derived types,
and conditional compilation was reviewed in detail; ad hoc subgroups worked
with the project editors of the last two of these efforts; X3J3 liaison
reports on all five were approved. Two of the TRs appear to be, with
relatively minor changes, in good shape. The draft TR on C interoperability,
however, appears to be less further along, and there is not yet adequate
consensus on its technical content; similarly, there is not yet adequate
consensus on the technical approach for parameterizing derived types.

At this meeting X3J3 had tutorials on derived-type i/o and asynchronous i/o.
In addition, technical specifications were approved for four items in the
"minor technical enhancements" category. Technical work on these and other
Fortran 2000 requirements, as established by WG5 at its July meeting, will
continue at the August 12-16 X3J3 meeting.
