Subject: informal JLW report on X3J3 meeting #136, Feb'96

The objectives of this meeting were to (1) continue development of items =
on the WG5 Fortran 2000 requirements list, (2) identify =
additional requirements to submit to WG5, (3) update the liaison reports =
on the three TR and two TR-like activities and (4) address =
outstanding issues on the Fortran 95 draft and corrigendum 3, as per =
WG5 requests.

Technical items considered include: derived-type I/O, asynchronous I/=
O, command line arguments, pointers to procedures, and =
object-oriented Fortran. One, asynchronous I/O, progressed to the =
detailed specification stage; these specs will be widely circulated =
for review/input prior to development of syntax. In coming meetings =
other requirements will also be progressed through stages of detailed =
specs, syntax, and edits to the standard.

X3J3 identified nine new items to be submitted to the WG5 =
requirements process: array components of arrays of structures, =
limiting pointer association, generic rate_count for system_clock, stream =
I/O, precedence for user-defined operators, generic pointers, min/max =
val/loc for characters, nonadvancing print*, and enhanced =
complex initialization. In addition, six items are proposed to be =
handled as part of WG5 requirement B.1 (Minor Technical =
Enhancements). These are: remove limitation on statement length (B=
.9), allow intent for pointer arguments (B.12), controlling pointer =
(lower) bounds, generic rate_count, min/max val/loc for characters, =
and enhanced complex initialization.

The five liaison report updates were produced. Two, those for =
C interoperability and conditional compilation, contain extensive =
technical comments and identify missing pieces. The report on =
allocatable extensions contains several (rather minor) technical =
comments and questions the apparently increased scope of this TR. =
The report on floating point exception handling recommends one (easily =
made) change; otherwise this work seems ready to be fleshed out into a =
full TR document. X3J3 knew of no additional work on parameterized =
derived types since the last liaison report and reaffirmed the content =
of that (last) report.

A informal WG5 ballot on the Fortran 95 draft resulted in several =
comments, which WG5 requested X3J3 to consider. This was done, =
resulting in recommendations of some relatively minor changes to the =
draft and corrigendum 3 editors. (A requested check of corrigendum 3 =
was also completed.)

The next X3J3 meeting will be held May 13-17 in Las Vegas, NV; =
arrangements were made to hold the next four X3J3 meetings (through Feb=
'97) at the Sunrise Suites in Las Vegas.
