    I suppose that you have noticed the recent discussion titled "Fodder for Meeting", which addresses the issue of discrepancies between various keywords for OPEN, READ, WRITE, and INQUIRE which take INTEGER values.  Some of these require default integers while others will take any kind of integer which is defined on the processor.  

    From some of the discussion it is apparent that this discrepancy is unintentional.  Letting the current situation continue creates effectiveness problems for some classes of large files.  It also creates portability problems.  

    From the remarks that I put on the WG5 Mailing List in the past few days, you are aware that I believe that we should fix this problem ASAP.  However, I do not know what the best method of pursuing this fix is.

    What is your recommendation?
