Meeting Logistics: Meeting #20

I am delighted to host Meeting #20 of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 22/WG 23. The meeting space is generously provided by Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC) International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS). They operate the US shadow committee for SC 22 as well as many other shadow committees and US standards committees.

Convenient transport within Washington, DC and its suburbs is provided by a subway system, Metro. The following stations are within 0.5 km of the meeting location: McPherson Square (Blue and Orange lines), Metro Center (Red line), Mt Vernon Sq/7th Street/Convention Center (Green and Yellow lines).

Meeting arrangements

Wireless internet will be available. Clerical support, copying, and printing are available on request, but the meeting is intended to be paperless.

I don't plan to provide refreshments, but there are several conveniently located businesses providing snacks, drinks, and lunch. In the past, INCITS has often provided coffee and drinks without charge, but such hospitality is their choice, not ours. No formal social events are planned.

Airports

Washington, DC is served by three airports.

• Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is within a few miles of the meeting venue. One can use the Metro or a taxi for transportation to downtown Washington, DC. Unfortunately DCA does not service international flights except for a few to Canada.
• Dulles International Airport (IAD) is located 26 miles from Washington, DC. Transport is available via taxis or shuttle buses.
• Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is located south of Baltimore, MD. Train service, Amtrak or MARC (Amtrak is more expensive, but more reliable), is available to Washington DC. Taxis are also feasible but would be pricey. Flights to/from BWI are sometimes priced less expensively than the flights to the Washington airports.

Weather

The average temperatures for the month of December is 45°F/7°C as a high and 28°F/-2°C as lows. Rain is likely.

Currency

The US dollar is currently valued at approximately 1.4 USD = 1 Euro. Coins are used for values less than one dollar. (There are one-dollar coins, but they are not commonly encountered.) Currency is printed in denominations of 1, 2 (rare), 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and larger. You may find it difficult to make small purchases with bills larger than $20. Credit and debit cards are commonly used, even for small purchases. ATM machines are also common but may charge a fee as high as $5.

Street crime can be a concern in Washington, DC, so it is best to remain in populated areas, particularly at night.
