From: Steve Clamage [stephen.clamage@sun.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 09:16 To: undisclosed-recipients Subject: 2003 Five-Year Maintenance Review To: C++ committee Message c++std-all-2487 According to http://www.incits.org/archive/2003/in030054/in030054.htm J16 needs to reaffirm or withdraw the 1998 C++ standard. I got an extension on the due date so we can vote in the April meeting instead of having to do a letter ballot in March. We are in the process of issuing a Techncial Corregendum. INCITS will issue the updated standard, with the TC incorporated, as a revised US standard, separately from our reaffirmation of the existing standard. Regarding work on a new standard, J16 has two options: 1. Continue as a Type I (International) project. We then need to issue a new project proposal: http://www.incits.org/sd3.htm The new standard then goes through two national reviews, a CD and FCD, as we did for the original standard. The advantage of this process is getting feedback from the public. 2. Vote to change our project to type L. In that case, ISO issues the standard, with J16 being only a TAG to WG21. ANSI automatically adopts the ISO standard with no national reviews. The advantage of this process is that less work is involved, particularly for the officers of J16. :-) We don't need to decide on options 1 or 2 right away. We will vote at the April meeting to affirm or withdraw the existing standard. --- Steve Clamage, stephen.clamage@sun.com
