Steve,

Thank you for passing on this very sad news.

Dan became J3 chair in 2001 and I first  met him at the WG5 meeting in
London that year. We decided that it was wasteful of our scarce
resources to have separate J3 and WG5 meetings and worked out a way to
co-chair joint meetings. This worked well and we used it for all my
further 16 meetings as WG5 convener (2002-2017). Dan became a friend
whom I looked forward to meeting each year.

I stayed on an extra day after the Boulder meeting in 2016 for a very
memorable walk with Dan up Mount Sanitas. I had to keep stopping to
catch my breath and take on some water and Dan was ever so patient and
sympathetic. I had all the arrangements in place to attend the 2022
Boulder meeting including another walk with Dan after meeting, but had
to cancel because I had covid. I am so sorry to have missed this last
chance to meet a dear friend again.

James, I would like to attend the memorial virtually.

With fond memories,

John.
