This is a very big loss and sad news. I texted Dan during the WG5 meeting
in Boulder in July 2022 to ask whether he would stop by the meeting, but he
replied that the weather was too hot. I met Dan when he attended one of
the first Fortran tutorials I ever taught with Karla Morris and Salvatore
Filipppne hosted by NERSC in 2012. Dan later hosted a tutorial that the
three of us we taught at NCAR, which ultimately led to connections and
collaborations that continue to this day. I quote Dan often in sharing
with me his philosophy on designing Fortran features: enable programmers to
communicate properties of their code rather than specific compiler
optimizations. That greatly affected my thinking on how to program. Dan
will very much be missed.
