He had been suffering from metastatic stomach cancer and a round of chemotherapy only produced a very temporary improvement and so he decided that the end had come and opted not to have any more. He died at home with his wife Marilyn by his side. Ivor was a member of X3J3 during the exciting period when Fortran 90 was being developed and for a number of years after that, representing Boeing. He also co-authored my Fortran 90 text book and I was privileged to call him a good friend as well as a valuable colleague. If anyone wishes to send condolences to Marilyn please send them to me and I will forward them to her.
