I told Peter that I was not aware of any WG5 members planning to attend
SC17 and, given that I had run a "Future of Fortran" panel at SC in recent
years, the SC committee was less likely to accept a BOF proposal of this
nature.

That said, it would be great to commemorate Fortran's 60th somehow - what
could we do?

Steve

Dear Steve,

I don't know if you are the best person for me to contact but as Chair of
the BCS Fortran Specialist Group I would like to see some commemoration
that 2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the release of the first Fortran
compiler by IBM in 1957.

It does not appear that the Fortran SG will be marking the event and so I
am wondering if something could be arranged for SC17 in November. I was
reminded by a message I received earlier this week that the deadline for
proposals for Birds of a Feather contributions in Denver is July 31.

In 2007 there was a panel discussion entitled 'Fifty Years of Fortran' held
on the morning of Thursday 15th November 2007 at the Supercomputing 07
Conference in Reno, Nevada.
This special panel session commemorated the 50-year anniversary of the
release of the first Fortran compiler by examining the impact that Fortran
has had on system software, applications, and computer architecture.
Included also will be a brief look at the future of the Fortran programming
language.

Panellist Details:
Frances Allen (Chair) - IBM Emerita - introduction
David Padua - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Henry M. Tufo - National Center for Atmospheric Research
John Levesque - Cray, Inc
Richard Hanson - Visual Numerics, Inc

Links to the individual contributions are available from the Fortran SG
website at www.fortran.bcs.org/2007/jubileevents.php.

Please let me know if you think some event could be arranged at SC17 or who
else I should contact.

Thanks in advance and best wishes,

Peter Crouch
