                                           ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5-N1777

                       BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTION
                 COMMITTEE ON PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES (IST/5)

UK National Activity Report presented to the meeting of
  ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG5 (Fortran), Las Vegas, NV, USA, May 4 - 8, 2009

Membership and meetings
In the comparatively short time since the previous WG5 meeting there
have been no changes relative to the report in WG5-N1757.

BSI Programming Languages Committee
There have been no Fortran-related JTC1 or SC22 ballots since the last
WG5 meeting; the SC22 ballot on Technical Corrigendum 4 is open at the
time of writing. Members of the Fortran panel took part in the
discussion leading to the UK vote on PDTR 24772 "Guidelines to
avoiding vulnerabilities in language selection and use".

Activity
The principal activity of panel members has been participation in the
email discussions on technical aspects of coarrays and on the draft TR
on Further Interoperability.

It was reported six months ago that there were divisions of opinion on
the document amongst both panel members and those members of the UK
public who had taken part in discussions. Since then there has been
no movement towards consensus. While some are keen to have access to
the new features, many of the panel believe that it would be premature
to proceed to FCD while some coarray features are still actively being
developed.

Despite WG5's decision at the previous meeting, there also remains a
body of opinion (cf UK comment 1 in WG5-N1740) that it would be
inappropriate to proceed to FCD before the full Fortran 2003 language
has been exposed to a wider range of users.

Acknowledgement
The BSI Fortran Panel gratefully acknowledges financial support from
the British Computer Society Specialist Groups Executive Committee and
from an individual benefactor.
