How to Reach the Hotel and Meeting Room (with Notes)

The recommended airport is Dulles, IAD.
Second choice is National, DCA.
Third choice is Baltimore, BWI.

If you want to drive to Fairfax, ask me for recommendations
of how to approach the Washington, D.C. area (it can matter).

BWI is likely the cheapest airfare, but it's an hour+ drive,
after you leave the airport grounds.
IAD is 15 minutes drive, DCA about 30 minutes.

The hotel is the Comfort Inn University Center Fairfax.
Its address is on Main St. Fairfax, but the entrance
to the parking lot is from Jermantown Rd.,
which intersects Main St. (a/k/a US 50 at that point).

The meeting annoucemnent says the hotel will provide
shuttle service between the hotel and Dulles, the hotel
has withdrawn that offer.

The building on campus is Student Union II, a/k/a SUBII.

From IAD:
Public transit, commercial shuttle, taxi, or drive.

Public transit:
Take the Washington Flyer bus
to the West Falls Church MetroRail station.
Take an Orange Line train West to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station.
Call the hotel for the hotel shuttle,
or take a CUE Gold 2 bus to the hotel.

Commercial shuttle:
Contract at the airport, or via the web,
links from IAD web site.
http://www.metwashairports.com/Dulles/

Taxi:
Go to the taxi queue, lower level (downhill from luggage claim).
Expect $30-$40 fare (including tip).

Drive:
At the airport exit, take VA 28 Sully Road South (far right).
At US 50, exit. Take US 50 East towards Fairfax.
At I-66 intersection, stay in through lane (3/4 to right).
At the second light, turn left onto Jermantown Rd. North.
Turn right into the hotel parking lot.

From DCA:
Public transit, commercial shuttle, taxi, or drive.

Public transit:
Go to the MetroRail station at the airport.
Take a Blue Line train North to the Rosslyn station.
Take an Orange Line train West to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station.
Call the hotel for the hotel shuttle,
or take a CUE Gold 2 bus to the hotel.

Commercial shuttle:
Contract at the airport, or via the web,
links from DCA web site.
http://www.metwashairports.com/national/index.htm

Taxi:
Go to the taxi queue at the curb in front of the terminal.
Expect $40-$50 cabfare (including tip).

Drive:
Take the North exit onto George Washington Pkwy North.
After the Potomac River bridges, get into the left lane,
left exit onto Spout Run Pkwy.
(The last bridge is the Key Bridge, but there's no access
from the Northbound Parkway. The next-to-last bridge
is the Teddy Roosevelt bridge, then Roosevelt Island and memorial.)
Go to US 29.
Turn right onto US 29 South, get into the left lane.
Turn left onto I-66 West.
Go to the US 50 exit (stay out of the right lanes),
Exit onto US 50 East towards Fairfax.
At the second light, turn left onto Jermantown Rd. North.
Turn right into hotel parking lot.

From BWI:
Public transit, commercial shuttle, or drive.

Public transit:
Take the shuttle to the AMTRAK station.
Take an AMTRAK or MARC train to Union Station in Washington.
Take a Red Line train to the Metro Center station.
Take an Orange Line train to the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station.
Call the hotel for the hotel shuttle,
or take a CUE Gold 2 bus to the hotel.

Commercial shuttle:
Contract at the airport, or via the web,
links from BWI web site.
http://www.bwiairport.com/

Taxi:
I recommend that taxis from BWI not be used unless
you want to pay over $100 in cabfare.

Drive:
Exit the airport via I-195. Go West to I-95.
Take I-95 South towards Washington.
As you approach the Capitol Beltway, keep right.
At the Capitol Beltway, take I-495 West towards I-66.
Between the Georgia Ave. interchange and the I-270 split,
the beltway has lots of curves,
called "the Rock Creek Roller Coaster" by locals.
Stay on I-495 at I-270 split (keep to the left side).
At I-66, take I-66 West towards Front Royal.
Go to the US 50 exit (stay out of the right lanes),
At US 50, take US 50 East towards Fairfax.
At the second light, turn left onto Jermantown Rd. North.
Turn right into hotel parking lot.

Notes:

Public Transit:
MetroRail requires use of a farecard,
which may be purchased from machines at the station.
Each rider needs a farecard.
The farecard is inserted into a slot on the turnstyle,
it will then reappear on top of the turnstyle.
Take the farecard from the slot. When leaving
the platform at the end of your trip, the process
is repeated, and the fare is deducted from the farecard.
You may read the amount left from the amount printed
on the farecard. If your farecard runs short, you may
add value to it via a farecard machine.

A reasonable amount is about $10 (airport and back plus),
if you intend to use MetroRail during the week several times,
say to go downtown, $20 - $30. At least some farecard
machines accept credit cards. The farecard
is inserted into a slot at the turnstile
both entering and leaving the platform.
All the farecard machines accept American cash.

The Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station is the West end of the Orange Line.
MetroRail trains are identified by a designation
on the front of the train, and by an electronic sign
on the side of the train. Also, an electronic display
overhead above the platform identifies the next train.

The hotel recommends that you call for the shuttle bus
before arriving at the station. Calling when on the train
at the West Falls Church or the Dunn Loring station
is reasonable, so a cell phone is handy.
The CUE bus leaves the station about every half-hour,
the hotel stop is on Jermantown Rd.

Driving:
Washington traffic is routinely among the worst
in the United States, so if you don't know the area
and want to drive around, invest about $12
in a street map (available in most grocery stores
and convenience stores). Plan your trip,
** and ** ask advice from a resident! The Northern Virginia
Street Map from ADC is a good one.

There is a grocery store across Jermantown Rd. from the hotel,
and there are many restaurants within 5 or 10 minutes walk.

Roads will be marked by means of numbers within:
United States roads may be Interstate highways,
designated by red, white and blue shield signs,
US highways, designated by angular black-and-white shield signs,
state highways, designated by rounded black-and-white shield signs,
or county, designated by round black-and-white signs.
Do not rely on road names, as these may change
whenever the road gets into a different jurisdiction.
(US 50 is Lee-Jackson Hwy. or Main St. or Arlington Blvd.)
Road names may also appear to change due to the highway department
improving intersections and straightening alignments
of old country roads.

I-66:
I-66 between US 50 and I-495 (the Capitol Beltway) has curb lanes,
which are on the far right, are only used sometimes,
and are dangerous anytime.
It is legal to use them only when the electronic signs
indicate the green arrow. Do not use the shoulder lane
when the electronic sign shows the red x. These lanes sometimes have
disabled vehicles in them, so if you use them, be especially alert.
These lanes started killing people literally from the day
they opened. I-66 inside the beltway is for carpools only
(a/k/a HOV) during rush hour. Violators get tickets.

How to go from the hotel to the meeting room:
Turn left from the hotel parking lot
onto Jermantown Rd. South bound.
Turn right at the stoplight onto US 50 West.
At the next light, turn left onto Waples Mill Rd. South.
Waples Mill Rd. will change its name to Shirley Gate Rd.
Go to Braddock Rd County 620,
turn left onto Braddock Rd. East bound.
The signs indicate directions to the Patriot Center on campus.
Start counting at the stoplight at Ox Rd VA 123 ( = 1st),
turn left into campus at the third stoplight, opposite Sideburn Rd.
Bear slightly to the right, go to Patriot Circle.
Turn right on Patriot Circle.
Turn left at stop sign at Rivanna River Way, go up the rise.
Student Union II is on the left near the top of the rise.
The entrance to Student Union II is by the wide space
in the road, enter via the wide doors.
The information desk on the left will know the room.

To park, use the parking garage you passed before
reaching Rivanna River Way (Sandy Creek Parking Garage).
Parking costs about $9 per day.
SUBII is through the woods from the parking deck,
follow the path. There is a _long_ flight of stairs
going up from the lowest level. The information desk
is at the top. The Mason Pond Parking Garage is
on the other side of campus.

If the hotel bus driver insists on driving through
downtown Fairfax (not recommended), from Chain Bridge Rd. VA 123 South,
turn left onto University Dr. At the first stoplight,
turn right into campus. At the stop sign, turn left
onto Patriot Circle, and go to the stop sign at Rivanna
River Way. Turn right and go up the rise to the wide
spot in the road, SUBII is the building on the left.

You may download a PDF map of campus from GMU's web site.
It's the Fairfax campus.
http://www.gmu.edu/departments/infoservices/directions.html

The MetroRail station is on the Northeast side of Fairfax,
the hotel is on the West side, campus is on the South side.

About CUE busses:
There are two circular routes, Gold and Green. The hotel
is on the Gold route. MetroRail and GMU Campus are
on both routes. 1 busses circulate clockwise, 2 busses
circluate counterclockwise. Fare is $.50 per person.
Busses run about every half hour during the day.
Busses are generally not crowded.
The actual location of the busses may sometimes be learned
from NextBus, http://www.nextbus.com
There are CUE bus stops on both sides of Jermantown Rd.,
the 1 bus is on the hotel side, the 2 bus is across the street.
Do not confuse the CUE bus stop (green and gold sign)
with the Metro bus stop (red, white and blue sign)
or the Fairfax Connecter bus stop (red, yellow and black sign).

Use Gold 2 to go from Metrorail to the hotel,
use Gold 1 to go from the hotel to MetroRail.
The hotel shuttle bus will also take you between
the hotel and MetroRail.

Use Gold 2 to go from the hotel to Campus,
use Gold 1 to go from Campus to the hotel.
The hotel shuttle bus will also take you between
the hotel and Campus. The hotel, of course,
would prefer to carry as many folks as possible per trip,
or the shuttle may be busy with other guests,
so the CUE bus may be faster. Expect about 20 minutes
on the CUE bus between the hotel and campus.

To walk from the Campus CUE bus stop to Student Union II:
Turn left as you exit the bus and go along the sidewalk
clockwise around Patroit Circle. Pass the construction
and parking lots. Cross Rivanna River Way, and turn right
onto the wide straight sidewalk going up the rise. Pass
the satelite disk, the building on your left is SUBII.

I can show or tell you how to find stores with a better
selection of beer and wine than a typical grocery,
so gourmets won't suffer at FIDS. :-)
There is a state liquor store (VA ABC) within about 10 minutes walk
of the hotel. It is likely to have only a basic selection.

Ask me if you have any questions.
You can call me at 703 425 0983,
so a cell may be useful.
Let me know if you have any problems,
I can probably help.
