How to Reach the Hotel and Meeting Room (with Notes)

The recommended airport is Dulles, IAD.
Second choice is National, DCA.
Third choice is Baltimore, BWI.

BWI is likely the cheapest, but it's an hour+ drive,
after you leave the airport grounds.
IAD is 15 minutes drive, DCA about 30 minutes.

The hotel is the Comfort Inn University Center Fairfax.
Its address is on Main St. Fairfax, but the entrance
to the parking lot is from Jermantown Rd.,
which intersects Main St.

The building on campus is Student Union II, a/k/a SUBII.

From IAD
Public transit, commercial shuttle, taxi, or drive.

Public transit:
Take the Washington Flyer bus
to West Falls Church MetroRail station.
Take an Orange Line train West to Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station.
Call the hotel for the hotel shuttle,
or take a CUE Gold 2 bus to the hotel.

Commercial shuttle:
Contract at the airport, or via the web,
links from IAD web site.
http://www.metwashairports.com/Dulles/

Taxi:
Go to taxi queue, lower level (downhill from luggage claim).
Expect $30-$40 fare (including tip).

Drive:
At the airport exit, take VA 28 Sully Road South (far right).
At US 50, exit. Take US 50 East towards Fairfax.
At I66 intersection, stay in through lane (3/4 to right).
At second light, turn left onto Jermantown Rd. North.
Turn right into hotel parking lot.

From DCA:
Public transit, commercial shuttle, taxi, or drive.

Public transit:
Go to the MetroRail station at the airport.
Take a Blue Line train North to Rosslyn station.
Take an Orange Line train West to Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station.
Call the hotel for the hotel shuttle,
or take a CUE Gold 2 bus to the hotel.

Commercial shuttle:
Contract at the airport, or via the web,
links from DCA web site.
http://www.metwashairports.com/national/index.htm

Taxi:
Go to the taxi queue at the curb in front of the terminal.
Expect $40-$50 fare (including tip).

Drive:
Take the North exit onto George Washington Pkwy North.
After the bridges, get into the left lane,
left exit onto Spout Run Pkwy.
Go to US 29.
Turn right onto US 29 South, get into the left lane.
Turn left onto I66 West.
Go to the US 50 exit,
Exit onto US 50 East towards Fairfax.
At the second light, turn right onto Jermantown Rd.
Turn right into hotel lparking lot.

From BWI:
Public transit, commercial shuttle, or drive.

Public transit:
Take the shuttle to the AMTRAK station.
Take an AMTRAK or MARC train to Union Station in Washington.
Take a Red Line train to Metro Center station.
Take an Orange Line train to Vienna/Fairfax/GMU station.
Call the hotel for the hotel shuttle,
or take a CUE Gold 2 bus to the hotel.

Commercial shuttle:
Contract at the airport, or via the web,
links from BWI web site.
http://www.bwiairport.com/

Taxi:
I recommend that taxis from BWI not be used unless
you want to pay over $100 in cabfare.

Drive:
Exit the airport via I195. Go West to I95.
Take I95 South towards Washington.
At the Capitol Beltway, take I495 West towards I66.
Stay on I495 at I270 split (keep to the left side).
At I66, take I66 West towards Front Royal.
At US 50, take US 50 East towards Fairfax.
At second light, turn left onto Jermantown Rd.
Turn right into hotel parking lot.

Notes:

Public Transit:
MetroRail requires use of a fare card,
which may be purchased from machines at the station.
Each rider needs a fare card.
A reasonable amount is about $10 (airport and back plus),
if you intend to use MetroRail during the week several times,
say to go downtown, $20 - $30. At least some fare card
machines accept credit cards. The fare card
is inserted into a slot at the turnstile
both entering and leaving the platform.

The hotel recommends that you call for the shuttle bus
before arriving at the station. Calling when on the train
at the West Falls Church or Dunn Loring station
is reasonable, so a cell phone is handy.

Driving:
Washington traffic is routinely among the worst
in the United States, so if you don't know the area
and want to drive around, invest about $12
in a street map (available in most grocery stores
and convenience stores). Plan your trip,
** and ** ask advice from a resident! The Northern Virginia
street map from ADC is a good one.

Roads will be marked by means of numbers within:
United States roads may be Interstate highways,
designated by red, white and blue shield signs,
US highways, designated by angular shield signs, state
highways, designated by rounded shield signs,
or county, designated by round signs.
Do not rely on road names, as these may change
whenever the road gets into a different jurisdiction.
(US 50 is Lee-Jackson Hwy. or Main St. or Alrington Blvd.)

How to go from the hotel to the meeting room:
Turn left from the hotel parking lot
onto Jermantown Rd. South bound.
Turn right at the stoplight onto US 50 West.
At the next light, turn left onto Waples Mill Rd. South.
Waples Mill Rd. will change its name to Shirley Gate Rd.
Go to Braddock Rd County 620,
turn left onto Braddock Rd. East bound.
Start counting at the stoplight at Ox Rd VA 123 ( = 1),
turn left at the third stoplight opposite Sideburn Rd.
Bear slightly to the right, go to Patriot Circle.
Turn right on Patriot Circle.
Turn left at Rivanna River Rd., go up the rise.
Student Union II is on the left near the top of the rise.
The entrance to Student Union II is by the wide space
in the road, enter via the wide doors.
The information desk on the left will know the room.

To park, use the parking garage you passed before
reaching Rivanna River Rd (Sandy Creek Parking Garage).
Parking costs about $9 per day.
SUBII is through the woods from the parking deck,
follow the path.

You may download a PDF map of campus from GMU's web site.
It's the Fairfax campus.

About CUE busses:
There are two circular routes, Gold and Green. The hotel
is on the Gold route. MetroRail and GMU Campus are
on both routes. 1 busses circulate clockwise, 2 busses
circluate counterclockwise. Fare is $.50 per person.
Busses run about every half hour during the day.
Busses are generally not crowded.

Use Gold 2 to go from Metrorail to the hotel,
Gold 1 to go from the hotel to MetroRail.
The hotel shuttle bus will also take you between
the hotel and MetroRail.

Use Gold 2 to go from the hotel to Campus,
use Gold 1 to go from Campus to the hotel.
The hotel shuttle bus will also take you between
the hotel and Campus. The hotel, of course,
would prefer to carry as many folks as possible per trip,
or the shuttle may be busy with other guests,
so the CUE bus may be faster. Expect about 20 minutes
on the CUE bus between the hotel and campus.

To go from the Campus CUE bus stop to Student Union II:
Turn left as you exit the bus and go along the sidewalk
clockwise around Patroit Circle. Pass the construction
and parking lots. Cross Rivanna River Rd., and turn right
onto the wide sidewalk going up the rise. Pass
the satelite disk, the next building is SUBII.
