I have asked the scientific community in the DOE community, with whom I
work,
for a ranking of importance of the new features in F2003. This
ranking is to
be interpreted as a wish list for what features should be implemented
first.
The list is taken from a short paper by Dan Nagle, "What's new in
Fortran 2000?"

Below is the results of the poll based on roughly a 9 point scale (1 of
lowest
importance and 9 the highest):

_5.2_ enhancements to derived types

_5.4_ more object oriented programming support

_4.3_ the ASSOCIATE construct, data enhancements

_5.1_ input/output enhancements

_6.2_ procedure pointers, scoping enhancements

_4.1_ support for IEC 60559 (IEEE 754) arithmetic

_8.1_ interoperability with the C language procedures and data

_2.2_ support for international usage

_4.9_ enhanced integration with the host processor

From this list it is clear that interoperability with C is the most
important item
to the respondents.

Best Regards,
Craig
