SC22/WG20 N996 Martin Dürst agreed to make this report available to WG20. Martin added: The first publication of the Web services usage scenarios could be particularly interesting for SC22/WG20, but that's not yet out. The report will be sent to WG20 as soon as it is available. ====================================================================== From: Martin Duerst [duerst@w3.org] Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 10:01 AM Subject: Liaison Report From: World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Internationalization Working Group (I18N WG) Martin Duerst Title: Liaison Report The W3C Internationalization Activity has been restructured, and the I18N WG and IG (Interest Group) been rechartered in September. The new charters can be found at http://www.w3.org/2002/05/i18n-recharter/WG-charter.html and http://www.w3.org/2002/05/i18n-recharter/IG-charter.html. In particular, the WG has been structured into three task forces, the Core task force, the Web services task force, and the GEO (Guidelines, Education, and Outreach) task force. This offers many new possibilities for interested people to get involved in our work, to make sure that Web technology is well internationalized. The Core task force is continuing the ongoing work of the WG. For the Character Model (http://www.w3.org/TR/charmod/), the Core task force is making steady progress on resolving and addressing the last call comments received. In particular, the requirement that all software on the Web check for (NFC) normalization has been somewhat alleviated based on last call input. For the "Internationalized Resource Identifiers (IRIs)" Internet-Draft, a new version has been published as draft-duerst-iri-02.txt (see e.g. http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-duerst-iri-02.txt). One of the main changes in this version is a new solution for Bidi in IRIs, with many examples. Feedback on this draft is very much appreciated and should be sent as soon as possible to www-international@w3.org. The Core task force is also continuing reviewing other W3C specifications in various stages of development. The Web Services task force has started to work on a document describing usage scenarios and used cases for internationalization in the context of Web Services. We are expecting a first draft publication in a few weeks. The other deliverable of this task force is to produce a requirements document. The task force has already started it's work, but new members are very welcome, please see http://www.w3.org/International/ws/#join for details. The initial focus of the GEO (Guidelines, Education, Outreach) task force is to produce a framework and a set of guidelines and techniques on a 'best practices' level to help to make sure that internationalization of W3C technology is well understood and used. The task force has already started it's work, but new members are welcome, please see http://www.w3.org/International/geo/#join for details.
